What is the Editable KS1 Timelines resource?

This resource supports pupils’ understanding of chronology with this set of editable Key Stage 1 history timelines, designed to align closely with the National Curriculum they allow teachers to easily adapt them to suit the specific topics taught in their own classrooms or year groups.

The pack includes examples of how the timelines can be used across KS1:

  • Year 1: Focuses on events and objects from 1900 onwards, supporting the National Curriculum strand “changes within living memory.” The timeline is organised by decades to help younger pupils understand more recent history. It also includes space to add the three key historical periods studied during the year, making it easy for teachers to link classroom topics to a clear chronological framework.

  • Year 2: Extends further back to the 17th century, supporting topics such as The Great Fire of London and linking to the strand “events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally.” This timeline is organised by centuries, helping children place historical events within a broader historical context, again with enough space to pop on the topics taught over the year.

A highlighted red section on the timeline marks the period closest to the children’s own lives, helping them make meaningful connections between the past and present.

How can the resources be used?

Perfect for class displays, chronological teaching, and supporting historical understanding, these timelines provide a clear, adaptable framework for teaching KS1 history.

They can also be placed in the front of children’s books, allowing pupils to see all the history topics they study across the year in one place and helping them make clear connections between different periods of time.
