What is included in Continents Challenge and Wondrous Waves Resources?
The Continents Challenge and Wondrous Waves resources are two retrieval activities that support children in identifying and labelling the world’s continents and oceans. This knowledge is a key requirement by the end of KS1, and these activities are intended to be revisited regularly so that learning becomes secure and fully embedded over time.
How can the resources be used?
The continents activity focuses on helping children recognise and name the world’s continents, while the oceans activity develops understanding of the world’s oceans. Notably, the oceans resource includes six boxes to complete, even though there are only five oceans. This deliberate design choice helps children notice that the Pacific Ocean appears on both sides of a world map, reinforcing the important geographical concept that a flat map is a representation of a globe rather than the world being split in two.
Both resources are highly flexible and practical for classroom use. They can be printed and laminated so they can be used repeatedly with whiteboard pens for retrieval practice during lessons. Alternatively, the activities can be cut up into jigsaw-style pieces, allowing children to physically reconstruct the map. This hands-on approach encourages discussion, supports spatial awareness, and deepens understanding while making learning engaging and memorable.
