What is included in The Maya Civilisation Pack?
This engaging and informative resource pack explores the Maya civilisation, tracing its development from around 2000 BC to the present day, and is specifically designed for Key Stage 2 pupils.
The child-friendly resources introduce pupils to important events and developments in Maya history, including the growth of early farming settlements, the development of Maya writing and the rise of powerful city-states. Pupils will learn about the Preclassic, Classic and Postclassic periods, the building of impressive temples and pyramids, and Maya achievements in mathematics, astronomy and calendars. The resources also explore how Maya society developed alongside events in Britain, how many major cities were eventually abandoned, and how Maya communities continued after the Spanish conquest began in the 1500s. Importantly, pupils will discover that Maya people are still here today, with millions continuing Maya languages, cultures and traditions across Central America.
In addition, the pack includes a set of sequencing cards and a printable timeline activity. These hands-on resources encourage children to place key events and developments from Maya history in chronological order, helping them visualise how Maya civilisation changed over thousands of years. This interactive element strengthens chronological understanding, reinforces prior learning and encourages collaborative discussion as pupils explain their choices and explore connections between farming, settlements, writing, city-states, architecture and Maya achievements.
