What is included in The Kingdom of Benin Pack?

This engaging and informative resource pack explores the Kingdom of Benin, tracing its development from around 900 AD onwards, and is specifically designed for Key Stage 2 pupils.

The child-friendly resources introduce pupils to important events and aspects of life in Benin, including the growth of early farming communities, the development of Benin City and the construction of its impressive earthworks. Pupils will learn about the early Ogiso rulers, the rise of the Obas, trade with other West African communities, religious beliefs and the work of skilled craftspeople using materials such as wood, clay, iron and ivory. The resources also explore how Benin developed into a powerful and prosperous kingdom, renowned for its trade, government and remarkable brass and bronze artworks, as well as the arrival of Portuguese traders in the 1480s.

In addition, the pack includes a set of sequencing cards and a printable timeline activity. These hands-on resources encourage children to place key events and developments from the Kingdom of Benin in chronological order, helping them visualise how the civilisation changed and grew over time. This interactive element strengthens chronological understanding, reinforces prior learning and encourages collaborative discussion as pupils explain their choices and explore connections between farming, settlement, trade, leadership, religion and the growth of a powerful West African kingdom.
